Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Credit Requirements

Continuing Professional Education (CPE) helps ensure that you keep your skills up to date and refresh your memory about things you may have forgotten. There is lots of information to be knowledgeable about in this industry. We ask that you spend 20 hours a year to keep your skills sharp by participating in training. If you are a trainer yourself, you should take training courses presented by someone else to obtain CPE credits.

To maintain your CFCP certification, you must earn 20 CPE credits per year and you should report those credits when you login to your profile page. If you were certified at mid-year, your CPE credits will be pro-rated. CPE requirements are calculated according to the calendar date when you were certified. Essentially, we go by the certification date printed on your certificate.

Pre-Approved Training Providers
Any security course/seminar/webinar from any reputable security organization or college is acceptable and the following organizations have been pre-approved:
  • EC-Council
  • Cisco
  • CompTIA
  • Department of Defense
  • FISMA Center
  • ISC2
  • ISSA
  • ISACA
  • SANS
If you work for a U.S. government agency that has provided you training during the year, that training is acceptable if it is role specific training. Please list the name of the course, the U.S. federal agency, the hours, and the date you took the course. Mandated Security Awareness Training for all end-users and mandated Privacy Training for all end-users is not acceptable.

Webinars
Webinars by leading security companies also count as CPE credits. If you listen to a security webinar from a company like Symantec, Cisco, CORE, Guidance Software, IBM, Checkpoint, Juniper etc. you may receive CPE credits based on the time spent on the webinar. Indicate the name of the organization, date, time (e.g. 1 hour), and name of the webinar. Be sure to save your webinar registration in case your account is selected for a random audit.

College and University Classes
Successfully completed university or college courses in information security topics, including university online courses, earn 1 CPE hours per semester for each active hour of participation. For a 3 credit semester class that lasts 15 weeks, that is equivalent to 45 CPEs. For a 3 credit quarter class that lasts 12 weeks, that is equivalent to 12 CPEs. All colleges and universities must be accredited.

Obtaining New Certifications
If you obtain a new information security certification, one CPE hour is earned for each exam hour if you obtain a passing score. If the exam is a 3 hour exam, and you receive a passing score, you may receive 3 CPE credits for the passing of the exam.

Publications
You may earn CPE credits for publications that you write that are directly related to FISMA compliance. Submissions must appear in a formal publication or website and a copy of the article or the website address must be available, if requested. CPE hours are earned for the actual number of hours taken to author the material.

Presentations at Conferences
You may earn CPE credits for development and delivery of presentations related to FISMA compliance. For presentations, CPE hours are earned at five times the presentation time. For example, if the presentation is a one hour presentation, you may receive 5 CPE credits for that presentation. Unless the presentation undergoes significant modifications, CPE credits cannot be given for subsequent presentations of the same material.

Instruction and Teaching
You may earn CPE credits for development and delivery of presentations related to FISMA compliance. CPE credits are earned at 3 times the time estimated to take the course. If the course is a 2 day professional training course worth 12 CPE credits, you may earn 36 CPE credits for instructing the course. Unless the course undergoes significant modifications, CPE credits cannot be given for subsequent instruction of the same material.

Suggest a Training Provider
If you would like to suggest a professional educational institution to be added to the above list, please fill out the below form to make a suggestion. We do not list colleges and universities that are non-profits, have a campus, have an information security degree program of some type, and are already accredited because these colleges are considered pre-approved. We regret that we are unable to approve all professional organizations.

Suggested Organization:

Tell us why this organization should be added to the pre-approved list. Have you taken a course from them? What course? Please list their website. If you are currently an employee of the organization, please refrain from suggesting your own organization since we are interested in objective opinions only.
